Same brand, different line: does a finish name stay put?

Brands sell several interior lines, and more than one has a "Satin". Is the Satin you know the same range in both? The dataset holds two interior lines for each of the four brands, so it can compare a brand against itself, a useful yardstick for how much the name moves between brands.

The short answerMostly stable. Of 15 same-angle comparisons between two lines of one brand, 4 are identical ranges, 7 have one range inside the other, 4 overlap but are offset, and 0 are separate. The largest difference in range midpoint is 2.5 gloss units. Between brands, the same name moves by at least 13 units for Satin.

"Midpoint shift" is the distance between the two ranges' midpoints at the same angle (formula). In this table a shift of 0 always means the two ranges are identical.

What stands out

Why this matters for switching brands

The biggest line-to-line shift in the dataset is 2.5 gloss units (Benjamin Moore Eggshell at 85°; Sherwin-Williams Satin at 85°). Some names move much further between brands: Satin's midpoint spread across brands is at least 13 units at either angle (detail). For Satin and Semi-Gloss the brand is a much bigger variable than the line. At the flat end the picture is different: Flat, Matte and Eggshell differ between brands by 4.5 units at most, only a couple of units more than the largest line-to-line shift, so there the name is a fair guide in both cases.

One caveat runs the other way: a published range is a manufacturer's specification, not what a given can measures. Two lines with identical printed ranges may still look different on the wall.
