60° vs 85° gloss measurement, explained

Every gloss or sheen figure a paint manufacturer publishes was measured with a glossmeter — an instrument that shines light at a paint surface at a fixed angle and measures how much of it reflects back. The angle matters, and it’s the single most important thing to understand before comparing two paints’ published numbers.

The two angles you’ll actually see

Industry convention (ASTM D523 / ISO 2813, the standards most commonly cited for this kind of measurement, though not every manufacturer’s data sheet explicitly names which one it followed) defines gloss measurement at several possible angles. In practice, paint manufacturers’ consumer product data sheets tend to publish one or two of them:

Some manufacturers publish a figure at only one of these angles for a given finish; others publish both. Why you can’t convert between them

It might seem like a 60° reading and an 85° reading of the same paint should be convertible with some formula — multiply by a constant, apply a curve, whatever. They aren’t, reliably. The relationship between a paint’s 60° and 85° gloss reading depends on the specific formulation of that paint, not on some fixed physical law shared across all paints. A handful of finishes in this dataset happen to report both angles, and even among those, the relationship between the two numbers isn’t consistent from one finish to the next — which is direct, first-party evidence against treating any single conversion ratio as safe to apply broadly.

This is why GlossAtlas has a hard rule, explained in full on the methodology page: two finishes are only ever compared when both are published at the same angle. If your current finish is only published at 85° and the brand you’re switching to only publishes the comparable finish at 60°, GlossAtlas will say so honestly rather than bridging the gap with an invented number.

What this means for you

When you’re reading a paint’s data sheet yourself, check which angle a gloss figure was measured at before assuming it’s comparable to a number on a different brand’s data sheet. Two products can report similar-looking numbers at different angles and still not be a genuine comparison — and two products can look identical in a name-based comparison while measuring very differently at the same angle.
