Moving from Sherwin-Williams Emerald Satin to Benjamin Moore
Scenario. A hallway was painted in Sherwin-Williams Emerald Satin and needs a touch-up and a second room to match, but the nearest store sells Benjamin Moore. The instinct is to ask for "Satin". This page works through what the manufacturers' own numbers say instead.
1. The starting requirement
Keep the sheen of the existing room: not shinier, not flatter. The only authority for what "Emerald Satin" means in numbers is the manufacturer's data sheet.
2. What the manufacturers publish
For Emerald Satin, Sherwin-Williams publishes one figure: 10–20 at 85°. It publishes nothing for it at 60°.
Benjamin Moore publishes 9 finishes across two lines (Aura and Regal Select). Their angles:
| Finish | Published range | Comparable with Emerald Satin? |
|---|---|---|
| Aura Matte | 3–6 at 85° | Yes (both at 85°) |
| Aura Eggshell | 10–22 at 85° | Yes (both at 85°) |
| Aura Satin | 28–38 at 60° | No (published at 60° only) |
| Aura Semi-Gloss | 50–60 at 60° | No (published at 60° only) |
| Regal Select Flat | 1–4 at 85° | Yes (both at 85°) |
| Regal Select Matte | 3–5 at 85° | Yes (both at 85°) |
| Regal Select Eggshell | 15–22 at 85° | Yes (both at 85°) |
| Regal Select Pearl | 20–30 at 60° | No (published at 60° only) |
| Regal Select Semi-Gloss | 50–60 at 60° | No (published at 60° only) |
3. The same-angle restriction
Because Emerald Satin is published at 85° only, it can only be set against Benjamin Moore finishes published at 85°. That removes 4 of the 9, including the two that most readers would reach for first: Aura Satin (28–38 at 60°) and Regal Select Pearl. There is no formula in GlossAtlas that turns a 60° figure into an 85° one, because none is reliable (why), so those finishes are shown as "not comparable" rather than guessed at.
4. The candidates
| Finish | 85° range | Relationship to Emerald Satin |
|---|---|---|
| Aura Eggshell | 10–22 | Strong overlap 10 gloss units shared — closest published match |
| Regal Select Eggshell | 15–22 | Strong overlap 5 gloss units shared |
| Aura Matte | 3–6 | Nearest range, no overlap 4 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Regal Select Matte | 3–5 | Nearest range, no overlap 5 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Regal Select Flat | 1–4 | Nearest range, no overlap 6 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
Not comparable here: Aura Satin (published at 60° only), Aura Semi-Gloss (published at 60° only), Regal Select Pearl (published at 60° only), Regal Select Semi-Gloss (published at 60° only). Benjamin Moore did not publish 85° figures for them, so these are left out rather than converted.
5. The calculation
Calculation at 85°: Emerald Satin 10–20 against Aura Eggshell 10–22
- Shared span: from the higher lower bound (10) to the lower upper bound (20), which is 10 gloss units.
- Narrower range: 10 units wide (the Emerald Satin range).
- Overlap fraction: 10 ÷ 10 = 100%. At or above 50%, so a strong overlap.
Calculation at 85°: Emerald Satin 10–20 against Regal Select Eggshell 15–22
- Shared span: from the higher lower bound (15) to the lower upper bound (20), which is 5 gloss units.
- Narrower range: 7 units wide (the Regal Select Eggshell range).
- Overlap fraction: 5 ÷ 7 = 71.4%. At or above 50%, so a strong overlap.
Both are strong overlaps, so the label alone does not separate them. The numbers do: Aura Eggshell's range contains all of Emerald Satin's, while Regal Select Eggshell covers 5 gloss units of Emerald's 10 (so 50% of the starting range), because its lower bound (15) is higher than Emerald Satin's (10).
6. The result
- Closest published range: Benjamin Moore Aura Eggshell, 10–22 at 85°, strong overlap.
- Runner-up: Regal Select Eggshell, 15–22, also a strong overlap, with the smaller shared span.
- Checked in reverse: starting from Aura Eggshell and looking at Sherwin-Williams, the closest finishes areDuration Home Satin and Emerald Satin. So the match runs both ways.
- Not comparable: Benjamin Moore Aura Satin and Regal Select Pearl, published at 60° only.
The full pairing, with the reverse reading, is on the Emerald Satin and Aura Eggshell comparison.
7. How you would use it
- If the aim is "same or a hair glossier", Aura Eggshell fits: its upper bound is 2 units above Emerald Satin's.
- If the aim is "not shinier at all", the published numbers cannot settle it: both Eggshells have an upper bound above Emerald Satin's 20. A sample on the wall can.
- Do not choose Benjamin Moore Satin by name. It may suit you, but nothing here can say how it compares with Emerald Satin; a different angle is a different scale.
8. Limitations
- Ranges are manufacturer specifications; neither document says which tint bases they apply to.
- "Closest" is about gloss only. Colour, undertone, durability and price are not compared.
- One brand pair and one starting finish: it illustrates the method and is not a rule about every Satin. For the rate at which names fail, see is the same name the closest match?
