Compare paint finishes across brands
A can that says "Satin" tells you where a finish sits in one company's range, not how glossy it is. Each manufacturer sets its own gloss numbers for its own sheen names, so two "Satin" finishes can measure differently, and a "Satin" from one brand can measure like an "Eggshell" from another. GlossAtlas puts the manufacturers' published figures side by side, at the same measurement angle, for Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Valspar.
Same name, different published range
Each table shows what every brand publishes for each sheen name at one angle. "Not published at 60°" (or 85°) means the brand measured that finish at the other angle only; "not in dataset" means GlossAtlas has no finish with that name for the brand. Nothing is converted between angles.

The clearest case is "Satin". At 60°, 5 Satin finishes are published: Behr Marquee 15–25, Behr Premium Plus 15–25, Valspar Signature 20–30, Valspar Ultra 22–32 and Benjamin Moore Aura 28–38. Some of these ranges overlap and some do not. At 85°, 3 are published: Sherwin-Williams Emerald 10–20, Sherwin-Williams Duration Home 15–20 and Valspar Signature 35–40. Some of these ranges overlap. Some same-name comparisons are not possible at all: when one brand publishes a finish at 85° only and another at 60° only, there is no same-angle figure to compare, and GlossAtlas says so instead of guessing.
How "closest" is decided
- Same angle only. A 60° figure is never compared with an 85° figure, and there is no conversion between them.
- Ranges, not points. Manufacturers publish a range for each finish. If the shared span is at least 50% of the narrower of the two ranges, the overlap is labelled strong; a smaller shared span is partial.
- No overlap is still an answer. If nothing overlaps, the nearest range is reported with its gap in gloss units. Beyond 15 gloss units, GlossAtlas says there is no close equivalent instead of naming a poor match.
- Never "identical". A strong overlap means the published ranges share most of their span; it is not a claim about how two paints will look. See the methodology.
Comparisons worth reading first
Any two brands can be compared in the live tool. These few have their own page because they show a different lesson each. Each page answers both directions of the question.
| Comparison | Published ranges | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams Emerald Satin vs. Benjamin Moore Aura Eggshell | 10–20 vs 10–22 at 85° | Strong overlap 10 gloss units shared |
| Sherwin-Williams Emerald Satin vs. Valspar Signature Eggshell | 10–20 vs 12–22 at 85° | Strong overlap 8 gloss units shared |
| Benjamin Moore Aura Satin vs. Behr Marquee Satin | 28–38 vs 15–25 at 60° | Nearest range, no overlap 3 gloss units flatter |
