Moving from Valspar Signature Satin to Behr
Scenario. A bedroom in Valspar Signature Satin needs to be matched with Behr. Signature Satin is the only Satin in the dataset published at both angles, so there are two same-angle readings to make. This page shows what to do when they point in different directions.
1. The starting requirement
Stay as close as the manufacturers' data allows to Valspar Signature Satin, which Valspar publishes as 20–30 at 60° and 35–40 at 85°.
2. Two angles, two separate comparisons
A 60° figure and an 85° figure describe the same finish seen by the instrument at two angles: 60° is the standard for mid-gloss finishes, 85° picks up the low-angle sheen of flatter ones. GlossAtlas compares 60° with 60° and 85° with 85°, and never mixes them. When a source publishes both, the engine makes both comparisons, names the one that finds the closer match as primary, and shows the other as a second reading, so a disagreement is visible rather than averaged away.
3. Reading at 60°
| Finish | 60° range | Relationship to Signature Satin |
|---|---|---|
| Marquee Satin | 15–25 | Strong overlap 5 gloss units shared — closest published match (tied) |
| Premium Plus Satin | 15–25 | Strong overlap 5 gloss units shared — closest published match (tied) |
| Marquee Eggshell | 7–13 | Nearest range, no overlap 7 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Premium Plus Eggshell | 7–12 | Nearest range, no overlap 8 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Marquee Matte | 2–5 | Nearest range, no overlap 15 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Premium Plus Flat | 0–5 | Nearest range, no overlap 15 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Marquee Semi-Gloss | 45–55 | Nearest range, no overlap 15 gloss units glossier at the nearest edge |
| Premium Plus Semi-Gloss | 45–55 | Nearest range, no overlap 15 gloss units glossier at the nearest edge |
Calculation at 60°: Signature Satin 20–30 against Marquee Satin 15–25
- Shared span: from the higher lower bound (20) to the lower upper bound (25), which is 5 gloss units.
- Narrower range: 10 units wide (the Signature Satin range).
- Overlap fraction: 5 ÷ 10 = 50%. At or above 50%, so a strong overlap.
The overlap fraction is 50%, which sits exactly on the 50% line between a "strong" and a "partial" overlap. That boundary is a disclosed policy choice, so read the underlying numbers: the two finishes share 5 gloss units, and Behr's range is 10 units wide against Valspar's 10, shifted 5 units lower. Behr's two lines publish the same Satin range, so the pair is tied.
4. Reading at 85°
| Finish | 85° range | Relationship to Signature Satin |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Plus Eggshell | 17–22 | Nearest range, no overlap 13 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge — closest published match (tied) |
| Marquee Eggshell | 16–22 | Nearest range, no overlap 13 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge — closest published match (tied) |
| Marquee Matte | 2–5 | No close equivalent 30 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
| Premium Plus Flat | 0–5 | No close equivalent 30 gloss units flatter at the nearest edge |
Calculation at 85°: Signature Satin 35–40 against Premium Plus Eggshell 17–22
- Shared span: none (the ranges are 13 gloss units apart).
- Gap: 13, flatter than Signature Satin.
- The gap is within the 15-unit limit, so this is reported as the nearest range with no overlap.
At 85°, Behr publishes only Flat, Matte and Eggshell, so the nearest range (Premium Plus Eggshell 17–22; Marquee Eggshell 16–22) is 13 gloss units flatter than Valspar's. That is within the engine's 15-unit limit, so it is reported as nearest, not as "no close equivalent". Behr's Satin has no 85° figure, so the question that matters ("is Behr Satin close to Valspar Satin at 85°?") cannot be asked.
5. Putting the two readings together
- They point in different directions without contradicting each other. They answer different questions: one compares Satin with Satin at 60°; the other compares Valspar's 85° number with the Behr finishes that have one.
- The 60° reading is the usable one. It compares the two Satins on a figure both brands publish. The 85° reading adds a caution rather than an answer: Valspar's 35–40 at 85° is higher than any Behr finish that is published at 85°.
- No averaging, no converting. The two readings stay separate. A blended number would be an invention.
6. The result
Behr Satin (Marquee or Premium Plus, 15–25 at 60°) is the closest published match at 60°, with a shared span of 5 gloss units and Behr's range sitting lower. Behr's Satin has no 85° figure, so this page cannot say whether the two Satins also agree at 85°; that is the reason to buy a sample before committing a whole room.
7. Limitations
- The match sits exactly on the strong/partial threshold. The label sits on the boundary, so a small revision to either sheet could change it.
- Valspar Signature's sheets carry the revision date 2023-05-15 (3.4 years before the check) and Behr's Satin sheets Marquee 2023-10-01 (3 years) and Premium Plus 2020-05-01 (6.4 years); see how current the data sheets are.
- The 85° observation is a statement about the published numbers only. It is not a claim about how either paint looks.
- Valspar's other line, Ultra, publishes Satin at 60° only (22–32); the comparison above is for Signature.
